About Us

Club History

The Lanchester Mountaineering Club (Lanch) was formed in 1995 by former students of Coventry University. The name Lanchester is derived from the original name of Coventry University: The Lanchester Polytechnic. Many of the Lanch members belonged to Coventry University Mountaineering Society (CUMS) whilst at University and wanted to carry on the opportunity to meet up regularly in order to partake in various activities.

Our members have spread throughout the country and now include many members who did not attend Coventry University. Also due to the ever-expanding membership the club has developed its constitution to enable young families to attend events.

The Club has a full schedule of meets in a variety of locations throughout the UK and occasionally into Europe. Several members have undertaken expeditions to more exotic locations such as South America, India, Norway, Himalayas and Greenland. We try to maintain a very good relationship with Coventry University Mountaineering Club and have the opportunity to attend their meets as well as our own. Meets can be anywhere and at any time, hut based or camping. However most years we have had a New Year meet and an Easter meet which are always extremely popular. We also have an Annual General Meeting each Spring held at a different hotel each year, during which we have an opportunity to elect new Executive Members. The meeting concludes with a chance to dress up and dine in style.

Although the title of our club suggests that we are a mountaineering club, you will find that our activities are a lot more diverse on meets. We also have members who have branched out into skiing, kayaking, kite buggying, mountain biking and we are open to any new suggestions. For those who don't wish to partake in the activities we often frequent tea shops, gear shops and of course the pub!! Often we have social meets whereby the main activity planned for the weekend is, for example, going for a curry. Shrewsbury Curry night is an annual occasion now and extremely popular, so popular we don’t always hold it in Shrewsbury!
